Public hearing on tackling the root causes of migration

  • Public hearing on tackling the root causes of migration
    On 25 October, the Subcommittee on Human Rights, in association with the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, will hold a hearing on tackling the root causes of migration, the externalisation of the EU's migration policy and the treatment of refugees and migrants in partner countries in North Africa.
  • Upholding the values of respect for human rights and international law in the EU external and extraterritorial actions and cooperation in the area of migration has been a priority of the European Parliament for many years.
  • In April 2023, Parliament approved its position on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum.
  • Members will discuss with experts concrete ways to support an inclusive vision of human rights into the EU approach on migration.

On Thursday, MEPs will welcome UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk for a debate on the global state of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

  • On Thursday, MEPs will welcome UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk for a debate on the global state of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
  • Mr Türk’s visit to the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Civil Liberties Committee comes just after the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration celebrated in June, a landmark document which established the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and ahead of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in December.
  • The latter will also be the main focus of a European Parliament high-level conference in Brussels on 29 November 2023.
  • The speech by the High Commissioner, during his first visit to the European Parliament since his appointment in October 2022, also follows a recent visit by MEPs on the Subcommittee on Human Rights to Geneva, Switzerland, where they discussed the protection and promotion of human rights worldwide with UN officials and other stakeholders, including with Mr Türk.

    Official side event to the Syria Brussels VII Conference "Supporting the future of Syria and the region"
    On 23 May the Subcommittee on Human Rights, in association with the Delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries, will hold an official side event to the Syria Brussels VII Conference 2023, focusing on the tragedy of the hundreds of thousands people forcibly disappeared in Syria.
  • Members will hear from international organisations and victims' associations about their quest for the creation of an international mechanism dedicated to clarifying the fate and whereabouts of persons believed to be missing in Syria.

    On 25 April and in the context of the European Parliament Solidarity Days with Iranian People, the Subcommittee on Human Rights, jointly with the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and in association with the Delegation for relations with Iran, is holding an exchange of views on 'How to support Human Rights, Freedom and Democracy in Iran'.
  • The objective is to explore with a large spectrum of Iranian guest speakers, ways of supporting human rights, women and civil society in Iran, and to reflect on challenges and prospects for Iran's democratic movement.
