On 24 October, CULT Members joined in a reflection on the future development of the European Capitals of Culture (ECOC) scheme by representatives of past, current and future titleholders and the European Commission. - This initiative, started in 1985, aims to highlight the diversity of cultures in Europe, celebrate the cultural features that we share as Europeans, and foster the contribution that culture makes to the development of cities.
- Up to now, the title of European Capital of Culture has been awarded to more than 60 cities across the EU and beyond.
- Two years ahead of the 40th anniversary of the scheme, it is appropriate to assess whether it is still relevant today, how local artists, cultural and community organisations and inhabitants can be even more actively involved, how the European and cross-border dimensions can be strengthened and what enduring legacy Capitals leave for local communities.
