Flooding: Research in the Journal of Hydrology in 2017, analyzing 9,213 recording stations around the world, found there were more stations exhibiting significant decreasing trends (in flood risk) than increasing trends.

Key Points:
  • Flooding: Research in the Journal of Hydrology in 2017, analyzing 9,213 recording stations around the world, found there were more stations exhibiting significant decreasing trends (in flood risk) than increasing trends.
  • Hurricanes: Research conducted for the World Meteorological Organization in 2019 (updated in 2023) found no long-term trends in hurricanes or major hurricanes recorded globally going back to 1980.
  • “The evidence is clear—many of the claims that extreme weather events are increasing are simply not empirically true,” Green said.
  • “Before governments impose new regulations or enact new programs, they need to study the actual data and base their actions on facts, not unsubstantiated claims.”

The live music and festival industry is currently struggling with significant challenges, including expensive insurance premiums and the cost of living crisis impacting ticket sales.

Key Points:
  • The live music and festival industry is currently struggling with significant challenges, including expensive insurance premiums and the cost of living crisis impacting ticket sales.
  • In particular are the challenges associated with climate change, as extreme weather events becoming more frequent, severe and unpredictable.
  • Severe weather impacts on music festivals and concerts have ranged from delays and cancellations, to the evacuation of venues and areas mid-festival or mid-performance.

Death, injury and cancellations

  • In my research, I also looked at where and why events were being cancelled in the United States, finding at least 21 cancellations in 2022–23.
  • I also found similar cases in New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands.
  • In November, we saw the tragic death of a fan due to extreme heat at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Brazil.

The environmental impact of festivals

  • The UK’s live music industry produces 405,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
  • The primary sources of these emissions are audience travel, accounting for 43%, and the operations of live music venues, contributing another 23%.

Music festivals can make a change

  • The live music industry can reduce its environmental impact by adopting more renewable energy, and using sustainable transport options for artists and audiences.

Tree planting has emerged as a popular strategy for music festivals and bands to offset their carbon footprint and contribute positively to the environment.

  • Challenges such as rising supply chain costs and the cost of living are testing the viability of festivals.
  • It is important the event industry and festival-goers acknowledge their contributions to these escalating challenges, and take proactive steps towards greening music festivals.

Five questions for African countries that want to build climate-resilient health systems

These events have enormous health and social effects, among them death, injuries, malnutrition and diseases (infectious and non-communicable).

Key Points:
  • These events have enormous health and social effects, among them death, injuries, malnutrition and diseases (infectious and non-communicable).
  • How, then, can African countries build more resilient primary healthcare systems as the effects of climate change worsen?
  • The review mapped the available evidence onto the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) health system building blocks: leadership and governance; the health workforce; the health information system; infrastructure and technology; service delivery; and health financing.
  • We identified five key questions that health systems must answer to build more resilient primary healthcare.

1. What training do medical professionals need?

    • Health professionals in most African countries receive barely any training related to the health and social effects of dramatic changes in weather patterns.
    • The World Organisation of Family Doctors has also launched a global online training programme on planetary health.
    • But training new health professionals isn’t enough.

2. What are the community’s key vulnerabilities?

    • This kind of primary care has become policy in some health systems, for instance in South Africa’s Western Cape province.
    • The community-orientated approach has usually focused on addressing the social determinants of ill health such as early childhood development or education.
    • Now, environmental determinants of health and key climate-related vulnerabilities must also be considered.

3. How can the health system track environmental changes?

    • Health information systems traditionally collect data on health services and a population’s health needs.
    • Primary health care facilities and services need to identify the particular climatic events that they are likely to face.
    • Our scoping review did not find any African examples of health information systems tracking the changes or providing early warning of climate-related events.

4. How can health systems build climate resilience?

    • For example, a hybrid energy system may improve resilience and mitigate the health system’s carbon footprint.
    • Health systems need to consider how they can design facilities and systems to withstand environmental challenges, respond to emergencies and continue offering essential services.

5. What are the next steps?

    • The scoping review reveals a widespread absence of evidence on how to address the issue of climate change in African primary healthcare.
