Philadelphia, Pa., May 8, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Philadelphia, PA - A new children's book by author Regina Papale Mullen has just hit bookshelves, hoping to ignite discussions around children with disabilities and give perspective to their non-disabled peers. My Sixth Sense (www.MySixthSenseBook.com) explores ideas such as learning to laugh at yourself, differentiating little deals from big deals, and creating healthy self-concepts.
The book is authored by up-and-coming author and school psychologist, Regina Papale Mullen. My Sixth Sense shares anecdotal stories derived from the author's personal experience that allow all children to look at disability and differences through a new lens. All of this is done through the use of the Sixth Sense called humor, with light rhymes.
The author's stories are different. The book educates around the concept that encouragement and coping mechanisms are not necessarily things we learn or gain from those on the outside. Rather, these coping strategies are something we already possess within ourselves.
Throughout her life, Mullen struggled with Stargardt disease, which causes significant visual impairment. Her visual disability was instrumental in her career choice. She held a position as a school psychologist in the public school system for fourteen years, working with children from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Temple University, as well as a Master's degree and an Educational Specialist's degree in School Psychology from Florida State University.
Mullen talks about her journey writing My Sixth Sense and says, ‒When the idea for the manuscript came to life in my head a few years ago, my goal was to teach my young son how to deal with life's challenges and obstacles. As I started writing, I realized how important it is to bring levity and light to situations that can be dark and emotional and difficult to deal with.–
Mullen collaborated with a local artist on the book's illustrations, Mickey Bissell, who has been painting ever since she can remember. Her artistic talents are primarily in color and design. She is able to create intriguing paintings from life, memory, or from any favorite photograph. Her work is mostly in acrylics and watercolors on canvas and paper. This is Mickey's first children's book collaboration. Mickey has 8 young grandchildren whom she shares her love of art with at her studios in Ambler, Pennsylvania and Sea Isle City, New Jersey.
The book is available for purchase on Amazon and at www.MySixthSenseBook.com. The Sixth Sense called humor is inside of all of us just waiting to be discovered and developed.
About Stargardt disease
Stargardt disease is a genetic eye disorder that affects the macula, which is the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. The disease typically appears in childhood or adolescence, although symptoms may not become apparent until early adulthood.
Symptoms of Stargardt disease may include a gradual loss of central vision, difficulty seeing in dim light, distorted vision, and blind spots in the center of the visual field.
Currently, there is no cure for Stargardt disease, and treatment options are limited. Some treatments may include the use of low vision aids, such as magnifying glasses, to help improve remaining vision. In some cases, gene therapy is being studied as a potential treatment option.
