‘The first wave went through hell’ – how the 16th Infantry Regiment’s heroism helped bring victory on D-Day

Among the many Allied military units storming the Normandy coast on June 6, 1944, was the 16th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division.

Key Points:
  • Among the many Allied military units storming the Normandy coast on June 6, 1944, was the 16th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division.
  • Omaha would become the most deadly of the five D-Day landing beaches, as the U.S., U.K. and allied nations attacked Nazi-occupied France in World War II.
  • As a military and oral historian, I researched this particular regiment’s service in Vietnam and became fascinated by its earlier history as well.
  • By D-Day, the regiment had already participated in the World War II invasions of North Africa and Italy in 1942 and 1943.

A dangerous attack

  • Rough seas – swells between 3 and 6 feet, and 25 mph winds – swamped most of the tanks.
  • Ted Lombarski, a sergeant in the 16th’s F Company, recalled: “We were the first wave to hit the beach, Companies E and F of the 16th Infantry.
  • The bullets and shrapnel made the ocean appear to be boiling, according to an oral history of the regiment.
  • … The enemy was riddling the beach with machine-gun fire.” And Lombarski recounted: “Being in that first wave was like committing suicide.

Changing native vegetation laws to allow burning on private land is good fire management

The irony is, laws to protect native vegetation did nothing to prevent this destruction.

Key Points:
  • The irony is, laws to protect native vegetation did nothing to prevent this destruction.
  • With greater knowledge and understanding of the role of fire in the Australian landscape, we can take better care of native vegetation on private land as well as public parks.

Fire can be good for biodiversity

  • A wide range of species will benefit from good fire management, which creates a patchwork of different ages of vegetation.
  • Some plant and animal species are found only in long-unburnt vegetation.
  • Breaking up the landscape should also mean fewer animals will be caught in each fire, because they have places to which they can escape.

Managing fire at landscape scale

  • Proactive burning can reduce wildfire risk under most conditions, when managed at the whole-of-landscape scale.
  • This requires everyone to manage fire on their own land in a coordinated way.
  • Such an approach emulates Indigenous land management and was partially adopted by land managers in southern Australia until the 1970s.

The devastating Black Summer wildfires

  • The Black Summer fires killed an estimated three billion animals and drove at least 20 threatened species closer to extinction.
  • More than half of Kangaroo Island burned, including areas that had not seen fire since the 1930s.
  • While nothing could prevent the spread of fires under catastrophic weather conditions, many of Black Summer’s fires started earlier.

Burning does not equal land clearing

  • These effectively stopped the widespread clearance of native vegetation in the state.
  • While well-intended, the existing legislation discourages burning by private landholders, making it almost impossible for them to take responsibility for reducing fuel loads on their own land.
  • This is because South Australia’s Native Vegetation Act defines all burning as clearance.

What do other states do?

  • In Victoria, approval for burning on private land is managed at the local government level and appears to have no provision for ecological burning.
  • All states and territories allow exemptions for the purpose of bushfire prevention or fire fighting.

An opportunity for legislative change
