CORSIA is the first global market-based carbon credit scheme, targeted at reducing emissions from international aviation.

Key Points:

  • CORSIA is part of a basket of policy measures taken by the ICAO and allows airline operators to offset an amount of carbon dioxide emissions by retiring carbon credits.
  • Initially, ICE’s futures contract will only support CORSIA eligible carbon credits issued by the American Carbon Registry (ACR), which is currently one of two ICAO-approved carbon credit programs.
  • The CORSIA contract follows the launch in 2022 of ICE’s range of nature-based carbon credit futures contracts.

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- NATSO, representing America's travel centers and truck stops, SIGMA; America's Leading Fuel Marketers, and a diverse coalition representing fuel retailers, distributors, and consumers of advanced renewable fuels, urged the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Department of Treasury to uphold Congressional intent and subject sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to more stringent lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions modeling requirements under the 40B and 45Z tax credits enacted under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

Key Points:
  • The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) modeling requirements for SAF are a fundamental underpinning of the statutory framework that Congress created for biofuels within the IRA.
  • The IRA stipulates that the value of a SAF tax credit depends upon the reduction of SAF lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions.
  • "Supply will diminish, and diesel prices will rise along with the price of all consumer goods that move by truck.
  • Inviting industry to disregard CORSIA would represent an affirmative decision by the Biden Administration to increase diesel emissions and increase fuel prices.

Qantas can't charge these prices forever: the challenge ahead for new chief Vanessa Hudson

Retrieved on:

The silver lining for Qantas has been that high demand for air travel has enabled it to charge higher airfares.

Key Points:
  • The silver lining for Qantas has been that high demand for air travel has enabled it to charge higher airfares.
  • It even managed to report a A$1.43 billion profit in the second half of 2022.

High demand, but not enough planes or staff

    • First is the time and effort to return to service the aircraft stored during the pandemic, parked at regional inland airports and plane storage sites.
    • Qantas put about 100 of its 126 planes into storage, retired six ageing Boeing 747s and deferred delivery of new Airbus A321neo and Boeing 787-9 planes.
    • Never in the history of civil aviation have airlines had to store so many aircraft.
    • And the pilots, flight attendants and mechanics that are being re-employed all require refresher training before being cleared to work.

Competing for customers

    • Competition for customers will be a relatively minor concern as Qantas struggles to catch up to demand.
    • But this won’t last as airlines rebuild fleet capability, and current high prices for air travel decline.
    • In the US market, for instance, airfares returned to their pre-pandemic levels (in inflation-adjusted terms) at the end of 2022.

New challenges for an ageing fleet

    • This will be harder for Qantas than competitors, due to airline’s extensive network of medium and long-haul flights (which use more fuel) and ageing, less fuel-efficient fleet.
    • The average age of the Qantas fleet is just over 15 years, more than double that of rivals such as Singapore Airlines.
