With 19 votes in favour, MEPs from the Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) adopted unanimously on Tuesday a draft negotiating mandate on legislation introducing a geographical indication (GI) protecting the names of local craft and industrial products.

    On 13 April 2022, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a legislation to create a Geographical Indication system to protect crafts and industrial products whose qualities have a specific link to the place where they are made.
  • IMCO is preparing an opinion to JURI on this proposal and on 29 November 2022, the committee discussed the 400 amendments submitted in this regard.
  • These amendments propose inter alia.
  • to add more precision to the scope of products covered by the proposal and the length of the protection period, as well as to protect SMEs from excessive administrative work and high registration fees.
