    The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) today welcomed the announcement by the Attorney-General the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP that the government will appoint a standalone Privacy Commissioner and an interim Freedom of Information Commissioner.
  • This will mean the OAIC will have three statutory office holders: the Australian Information Commissioner (as agency head), a Privacy Commissioner and a Freedom of Information (FOI) Commissioner.
  • “I welcome this decision by the Attorney-General in Privacy Awareness Week to bolster the OAIC to carry out our important statutory functions,” Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner Angelene Falk said.
  • She will continue as Privacy Commissioner until the Privacy Commissioner appointment is made.

    The OAIC today welcomed the Attorney-Generals announcement that Leo Hardiman PSM QC has been appointed Freedom of Information Commissioner, commencing 19 April 2022.
  • In 2020 Mr Hardiman was awarded the Public Service Medal for "outstanding public service through the provision of legal services to the Commonwealth".
  • Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner Angelene Falk said that Mr Hardiman's extensive experience will make a significant contribution to progress the OAICs important freedom of information work.
  • We look forward to welcoming Mr Hardiman to the OAIC and advancing the important work to promote public access to information held by Australian Government agencies and ministers, Commissioner Falk said.
