Ukraine gets some of what it wants

    • Ukraine also secured further commitments to nonlethal assistance and training from NATO members.
    • Ukraine was embraced by NATO publicly and given clear shows of support and bilateral assistance from key members of the alliance.
    • And that shouldn’t be overshadowed by some of the noises of disappointment or talk of Ukraine not showing enough “gratitude” toward NATO members.

Stronger with Sweden after Turkey relents

    • Before announcing that Ankara would no longer stand in Sweden’s way, Erdoğan had suggested that his compliance on Sweden might be conditional on the European Union’s looking favorably on Ankara’s own bid to join the economic union.
    • Erdoğan’s about-face on Sweden allowed him to look magnanimous on the international stage, but it was likely rooted in domestic politics.
    • It was notable that a day after Erdoğan’s announcement, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán signlaled that he too would now greenlight Sweden’s bid.

Back to adversary-based military planning

    • The alliance also approved a pivot in how it will conduct defense planning and how it views its strategic goals and objectives.
    • For the past 30 years, NATO planning has been geared around general threats rather than targeted at clear adversaries.
    • And despite concern over the growing military threat from China, the Asian giant is not identified in the summit communiqué as a primary military threat to NATO nations.
    • At the same time, the communiqué made clear that NATO is open to engagement with China.

Why is NATO expanding its reach to the Asia-Pacific region?

Since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, NATO meetings and summits have been receiving significantly more attention compared to previous years.

Key Points:
  • Since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, NATO meetings and summits have been receiving significantly more attention compared to previous years.
  • And there are several big-ticket items on the agenda at the upcoming summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, which begins on Tuesday.
  • Ukraine is seeking an invitation and a roapmap to eventually join NATO, which the US and Germany, in particular, have resisted while an active war is occurring.

NATO’s interest in the Asia-Pacific

    • The four will be in attendance for the second year in a row, following last year’s NATO summit in Madrid.
    • While NATO’s outreach efforts to the Asia-Pacific region are still in the infancy stage, they have generated some criticism in recent days.
    • Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating called Stoltenberg a “supreme fool” for boosting the bloc’s ties with the region.
    • With NATO so heavily focused on Ukraine at the moment, its interest in a region half-way around the world does raise some questions.

What these new partnerships will look like

    • But despite hesitations among some commentators, the four Asia-Pacific countries generally want to move in the direction of stepping up their cooperation with NATO.
    • This is why, in the lead-up to the summit, NATO has been working to formalise its partnerships with the four countries.
    • The partnerships will largely focus on areas of global concern, such as maritime security, cybersecurity, climate change, outer space, and emerging and disruptive technologies (including artificial intelligence).

Why is this happening now?

    • Nowadays, strengthening these partnerships is seen as a vital part of responding to the new challenges and threats posed by Russia and China.
    • Of course, this does not mean we will see NATO military equipment or troops permanently stationed in the Indo-Pacific.
    • These new partnerships can be effective in addressing everything from disinformation and maritime security to cyber defence and competition in space.
    • Indeed, China has criticised the proposed NATO liaison office in Tokyo as an attempt to “destroy regional peace and stability”.
