Israel-Hamas war: six key moments for the Gaza Strip

More than 5,700 people in Gaza have been reportedly killed by Israeli airstrikes in two weeks of relentless bombardment – at least 2,000 of whom are children.

Key Points:
  • More than 5,700 people in Gaza have been reportedly killed by Israeli airstrikes in two weeks of relentless bombardment – at least 2,000 of whom are children.
  • More than 200 more people, including women, children and elderly people, were seized and taken into Gaza.

How has such a tiny strip of land – less than half the size of Berlin – become so critical to the politics of an entire region? Over the past 75 years, the Gaza Strip has frequently been the focal point of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Here are six key moments that led up to the current crisis:

1. 1948: Palestinian dispossession

  • By this time, more than 750,000 Palestinians – around three-quarters of the population – had been turned into refugees.
  • Their dispossession became known in Arabic as the Nakba (catastrophe).
  • The Strip’s famously dense population today can be traced directly to the dispossession of 1948.

2. 1956: First Israeli occupation of Gaza

As Gaza was administered by Egypt after 1948, it became a key battleground in the 1956 Suez crisis. After Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal Company, Britain, France and Israel launched an attack on Egypt. As part of this, Israel occupied Gaza with evidence of plans for long-term occupation.
In the event, due to US intervention, Israel and its allies were defeated and Washington forced Israel to withdraw its troops early in 1957. But this would not be the last time it occupied the Strip.

3. 1967: Israel begins long-term occupation of Gaza and the West Bank

  • It captured the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank from Jordan, and the Gaza Strip and the Sinai desert from Egypt.
  • This began its long-term military occupation of the two parts of Palestine not taken in 1948: the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

4. 1987: First intifada begins

In December 1987, an Israeli army truck crashed into a car in Gaza, killing four Palestinians. The incident sparked the beginning of the first intifada (uprising), which would eventually spread across the whole of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
Palestinians in both occupied territories boycotted Israeli goods, refused to pay taxes, and withdrew their labour from Israeli employers. There was also widespread stone-throwing at Israeli army vehicles and soldiers. The intifada shook up longstanding Israeli assumptions that most Palestinians were passive in the face of the occupation, and is credited as a key factor in forcing negotiations in the early 1990s.

5. 1994: Yasser Arafat sets up the Palestinian Authority in Gaza

From 1993-95, the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat, signed the Oslo Accords, a set of agreements designed to pave the way for a full peace deal. Oslo allowed for limited Palestinian autonomy in parts of the occupied territories.

  • In 1994, Arafat was instrumental in establishing the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Gaza City, from which Israeli forces partially withdrew.

6. 2007: Hamas takes power in Gaza

  • Again, the Gaza Strip was at the centre of this.
  • In 2006, Hamas won Palestinian parliamentary elections, taking 44% of the vote.
  • Since then, Palestinians in Gaza have faced continual violence, with particularly intensive Israeli bombing campaigns in 2008-9, 2012, 2014 and 2021.

What does it mean to be a 'daddy'?

Retrieved on:

Actor Pedro Pascal was recently crowned the internet’s daddy.

Key Points:
  • Actor Pedro Pascal was recently crowned the internet’s daddy.
  • There is an app called Dream Daddy where players can date a daddy.
  • My new book, Daddies of a Different Kind: Sex and Romance Between Older and Younger Adult Gay Men, investigates this topic.

What is a daddy?

    • This mentorship involved a range of topics, from how to come out to family to how to advance in their careers.
    • The connection between older and younger adult men was not just physical, it was emotional too.
    • In contrast to stereotypes, there was little evidence of widespread power differentials that harmed either older or younger adult men.
    • One reason why is that men viewed nurturance of younger adult men as key to daddyness.

Why are younger men interested in daddies?

    • In addition to mentorship, younger adult men described a variety of reasons they enjoyed the company of older men.
    • Yet the younger adult men I talked to desired older men for their emotional maturity and other non-financial traits.
    • DaShawn (27) agreed: “Sometimes I feel like people my own age are immature.” Overall, the younger adult men felt like they connected better with older men.
    • Those sorts of physical features I find really are the things that draw me most.” Younger adult men did not desire older men despite their appearance, but in part because of it.

Connecting generations

    • Older-younger pairings between adults help to connect different generations of gay and bisexual men.
    • “I feel like I am creating a connection with previous generations of queer people.
    • Younger adult men can learn from older men what life was like for gay and bisexual men in prior decades.
    • This shows that gay and bisexual men are more open to, or interested in, older-younger pairings between adults than other groups.

No rate hike yet, but will it rise on Melbourne Cup Day? It all depends on petrol prices

Retrieved on:
Tuesday, October 3, 2023

If the Reserve Bank does push up interest rates again, the most likely next date is its next board meeting, on Melbourne Cup Tuesday.

Key Points:
  • If the Reserve Bank does push up interest rates again, the most likely next date is its next board meeting, on Melbourne Cup Tuesday.
  • It’s uncertain about what’s happening to China’s economy; it’s uncertain about the lagged effect of the 12 increases to date; and it’s suddenly less certain about inflation.

Inflation has kicked back up

    • In the US, annual inflation plummeted from a peak of 9.1% to 3% before edging back up to 3.7%.
    • In Australia, the monthly measure of annual inflation dived from 8.4% to 4.9% before edging up to 5.2%.
    • This means inflation is moving further away from, rather than closer to, the Reserve Bank’s 2-3% target band.
    • The first thing to consider (and they considered it in the first meeting under Michele Bullock on Tuesday) is what’s caused the uptick in inflation.

Petrol is fuelling inflation

    • Statistically, all of the uptick in inflation (yes, all of the uptick) was caused by an increase in one price – what the Bureau of Statistics calls automotive fuel, and what the rest of us call petrol and diesel.
    • Had that price not soared an astounding 9.1% in one single month, August, the inflation rate for August would have remained steady at 4.9%.

Suddenly, petrol’s $2.20 per litre or more

    • The result – bolstered by a much lower Australian dollar – has been soaring prices.
    • We’ve even seen new records set in some places, including Brisbane’s record unleaded price of $2.38.
    • In August, retail spending grew just 0.2%, at a time of rapid population growth and still rapid price growth.
    • And here’s the thing about the latest increase in petrol prices: it will wind back spending on things other than petrol even further.

Petrol could be fuelling ‘disinflation’

    • AMP chief economist Shane Oliver thinks the latest petrol price rises could be disinflationary.
    • Offsetting this is the reality that petrol and diesel prices have risen.
    • In time, those higher prices will feed through into higher prices for just about everything that is moved by trucks.
