Israel hits back at Iran: How domestic politics is determining Israeli actions

Retrieved on:
Friday, April 19, 2024

Notably, Israel’s strike against Iran appears to have been more symbolic than substantive.

Key Points:
  • Notably, Israel’s strike against Iran appears to have been more symbolic than substantive.
  • Nevertheless, the overnight Israeli strike is the latest escalation in tensions between the two countries.

Reputations at stake

  • To do otherwise would have damaged the Iranian government’s reputation among both its allies and its citizens.
  • But the form that Iranian retaliation took is a key indication of Iran’s intentions.
  • Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system and U.S. military bases in the region made the likely impact of Iran’s attack minimal.

The proxy dilemma

  • Since the Iranian Revolution, Iran, through the Quds Force and its predecessors, has actively courted several proxy groups in the Middle East to increase its strategic influence.
  • Hezbollah came into existence in response to Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon in the 1980s, and received extensive support from Iran.
  • While these proxy groups have increased Iran’s political influence and strategic options in the Middle East, they can simultaneously be a burden for the country’s leadership because they aren’t under Iran’s complete control.
  • For Iran, this presents a strategic dilemma.

A coalition of many

  • The 2022 elections returned a fractured Knesset, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was only able to form a coalition government that included several far-right parties.
  • The small size of his majority meant that far-right partners were able to demand concessions to support his government.
  • The government’s inability to negotiate a release for the remaining hostages held by Hamas remains a festering wound in Israeli politics.
  • National Unity’s leader, Benny Gantz, formed a war cabinet with Netanyahu and Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant to direct the war effort.

Netanyahu’s hand forced?

  • The smaller far-right parties in Netanyahu’s coalition that are outside the war cabinet, however, likely forced the prime minister’s hand.
  • National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, leader of the ultra-nationalist Otzma Yehudit party, has stated that Israel needs to “go crazy” in its response.

What’s next?

  • It eliminated a leader of the Quds Force, and Iran’s retaliation did not manage to breach the defences of Israel or its allies.
  • Now, the world waits to see if Israel’s latest strike against Iran leads to a broader regional escalation.

Mungiki, Kenya’s violent youth gang, serves many purposes: how identity, politics and crime keep it alive

Retrieved on:

Kenya has scores of youth gangs known for their violence and links to the politically powerful.

Key Points:
  • Kenya has scores of youth gangs known for their violence and links to the politically powerful.
  • None is more infamous than the Mungiki movement, with a past membership estimated to be at least a million.

What gave rise to Mungiki?

  • The early 1990s witnessed the first bout of politically instigated inter-ethnic conflict intended to diminish Kikuyu influence in local politics.
  • Mungiki emerged as a Kikuyu youth movement, defending the dispossessed: women, migrants and landless youth.
  • At this time the grouping also opposed the autocratic and corrupt government of Daniel arap Moi, a Kalenjin.
  • In the 1997, 2002 and 2007 parliamentary and presidential elections, leading politicians mobilised violent youth militia in support of their campaigns.
  • In Nairobi’s shantytowns, Mungiki activists and militia competed with other militias like Kamjesh, and the Taliban in Mathare Valley.

What are the group’s practices and beliefs?

  • Mungiki operates primarily in urban neighbourhoods where it combines vigilante, welfare, cultural and criminal activities.
  • It reaches back into Kenya’s pre-colonial and colonial history for the origins of its beliefs and practices.
  • The values underlying these practices continued during Kenya’s anti-colonial struggle in the 1940s and 1950s, in the liberation movement known as Mau Mau, which was predominantly Kikuyu.
  • These values, although modified and expanded, still form the core of Mungiki’s practices and beliefs.

Why was it banned?

  • Throughout its existence, the organisation has resorted to violence to recruit and keep members.
  • At the political level, national and local leaders may see the popularity and persistence of the movement as a threat to stability and their own hold on power.

Though banned, it hasn’t really gone away, has it?

  • He made public his conversion to Christianity in 2006, and on his release in 2009 he declared the movement finished.
  • It has a moral appeal to young men and women for stressing “clean living”, without loose sex and alcohol.
  • Kenyan politics are still violent, the domain of elderly, entitled men, and ridden with mistrust and corruption.

Myanmar’s misery: 3 years after the military coup, is there any end in sight for a ravaged country?

Retrieved on:
Tuesday, January 30, 2024

Three years since a military coup ousted Myanmar’s democratically elected government on February 1, 2021, a brutal civil war has left the country devastated.

Key Points:
  • Three years since a military coup ousted Myanmar’s democratically elected government on February 1, 2021, a brutal civil war has left the country devastated.
  • Democratic governments from around the world might shorten the conflict by supplying the opposition forces and more progressive ethnic armed groups with aid and military support.

Myanmar junta reducing Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence is an empty gesture from a failing state

What is life like under the military junta?

  • Myanmar struggled during the first year of the COVID pandemic, but unlike other countries, it has yet to see a recovery.
  • Many other parts of society have been transformed for the worse by three years of jolting political violence.
  • Many limp along, a pale facsimile of the vibrant and outward-looking teams that did such impressive work before the coup.
  • Many young people have abandoned their studies and careers to fight against the military, or are plotting their routes to escape.

What gains have been made by the opposition forces?

While the military and opposition have been in a stalemate for most of the last three years, there have been rapid developments on the battlefield in recent months, with the junta experiencing catastrophic losses. In October, opposition forces known as the Three Brotherhood Alliance conducted Operation 1027, capturing two border towns in northern Shan state and overrunning hundreds of military posts and bases.

  • And in the central Sagaing region, the People’s Defence Force, the armed wing of the exiled opposition National Unity Government, captured a key town.
  • Then, in mid-November, the powerful Arakan Army, part of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, broke a year-long ceasefire with the military in western Rakhine state.
  • They seized border guard posts and attacked regime forces in four major townships, resulting in tens of thousands of displaced villagers.
  • But as the war in Ukraine has also shown, inexpensive drone technology is starting to win battles for the opposition forces, as well.

What will 2024 bring?

  • But it may find that keeping the coup makers in charge serves to delay the rebuilding of a shattered society and could further destabilise the region.
  • But as with the the conflict in Ukraine, US funding for Myanmar has been delayed due to gridlock in Washington.
  • The junta leaders may eventually seek some kind of political compromise, particularly if there are fractures within the military.
  • Nicholas Farrelly has previously received funding from the Australian Research Council for Myanmar-focussed work.
  • He is on the board of the Australia-ASEAN Council, which is an Australian government body, and also a Director of NAATI, Australia's government-owned accreditation authority for translators and interpreters.

Kenya's political elites switch parties with every election – how this fuels violence

Retrieved on:
Tuesday, May 16, 2023

This isn’t surprising in Kenya where political elites switch parties and coalitions with every election.

Key Points:
  • This isn’t surprising in Kenya where political elites switch parties and coalitions with every election.
  • Gilbert Khadiagala, a political scientist who has researched the fluidity of Kenya’s political coalitions, explains the impact of this.

What is the background of Kenya’s fluid political landscape?

    • The onset of the multiparty era in the early 1990s brought a new phase of complex political coalitions and alliances.
    • They were competing against the previously dominant political party, the Kenya African National Union (KANU).
    • In 30 years of competitive politics, coalitions were expected to gradually stabilise into coherent political parties with national reach and resonance.
    • Germany’s coalition governments are largely based on well-established political parties, not conglomerations concocted before elections as in Kenya.
    • The winner-takes-all political systems of countries like Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Sierra Leone face a related problem: they have very small independent private sectors.

What are the main weaknesses of fluid political coalitions?

    • The National Rainbow Alliance (NARC), led by Mwai Kibaki, was a grouping of the leading ethnic groups ranged against Moi’s chosen successor, Kenyatta.
    • But it ended in civil conflict in 2007-2008 after Kibaki marginalised key allies largely on ethnic and regional lines.
    • Subsequent political alliances have reproduced the conditions for anxiety and chaos after every election.
    • Despite the 2010 constitution giving more power to Kenya’s 47 counties, political elites remain fixated on winning presidential elections to gain power at the centre.

What are the strengths of these loose coalitions?

    • The loose coalitions enable leaders who neither share policies nor vision to temporarily accommodate each other.
    • The fluid coalitions are, therefore, essential in such political landscapes until national cohesion and coherence are achieved.
    • When the search for presidential power ceases to be politically relevant and salient, Kenya’s politics will be normalised.

What adjustments should be made?

    • When those interests are highlighted – instead of ethnic and regional affiliations – political parties with national outreach could emerge.
    • The puzzle for Kenya is how to transform ethnic diversities and identities into the foundations for predictable and organised politics.
