The Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) registered the main waves of COVID-19 infections later than most of the EU countries, but containment strategies were implemented at the same time and with equal force as in the rest of Europe.

The Council today appointed Tom Szunyog from the Czech Republic, as EU Special Representative (EUSR) for Kosovo* from 1 September 2020 until 31 August 2021.

  • He will replace Natalya Apostolova who has held the EUSR position since 20 July 2016.

  • The EU Advisory Mission in Ukraine started its operations in December 2014 with the aim of assisting the Ukrainian authorities towards a sustainable reform of the civilian security sector.
