    On Thursday MEPs supported the candidacy of Carlo Alberto Manfredi Selvaggi, nominated by the Italian government, for the EU Court of Auditors (ECA).
  • Background
    Carlo Alberto Manfredi Selvaggi has been serving in the Italian Court of Auditors since 1997, as Substitute Prosecutor General until 2005, and Deputy Prosecutor General until 2021.
  • The mandate of the previous Italian ECA member Mr Pietro Russo expired on 29 February.
  • Under the EU Treaty, each member state can propose its candidate for the European Court of Auditors.

    On 24 March 2023, the Budgetary Control Committee will hold a hearing and vote on the renewal of Ms Ildikó Gáll-Pelcz as the Hungarian Member of the European Court of Auditors.
  • Following nomination by the government of Hungary, the Budgetary Control Committee invited Ms Ildikó Gáll-Pelcz to a hearing.
  • During the hearing, CONT Members will ask questions and evaluate her credentials as nominee to the European Court of Auditors, in particular in view of the requirements laid down in Article 286(1) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
  • CONT will give an opinion for the appointment of the candidate in the form of a recommendation to the Plenary.

    On 25 April 2023, Bettina Jakobsen, Member of the European Court of Auditors, will present the Special report 27/2022 "EU support to cross-border cooperation with neighbouring countries" to the AFET and CONT Committees.
  • In this audit, the Court assessed whether the programmes of the cross-border cooperation between EU Member States and the sixteen neighbourhood countries during the 2014-2020 financing period have been effective in enhancing territorial cooperation across the EU's external borders.
  • The Court concluded that the programmes targeted relevant needs, but their complementarity with other EU-funded programmes was insufficient, and that the EU Delegations were not sufficiently involved.
