Kelp forests help to support fisheries, draw down carbon and improve water quality — in the process contributing billions to the global economy.

Key Points:
  • Kelp forests help to support fisheries, draw down carbon and improve water quality — in the process contributing billions to the global economy.
  • We also show that, despite recent impacts of climate change, kelp forests in some areas have remained stable, offering hope for future kelp forests and shedding light on the drivers of ecosystem resilience.

Marine forests in hot water

  • Beginning in 2014, a string of marine heat waves created warmer-than-usual conditions that have wreaked havoc on a range of ocean species.
  • Marine heat waves are becoming longer and more intense as greenhouse gas emissions continue.
  • Together, marine heat waves and seastar declines led to devastating kelp forest losses along many parts of North America’s west coast over the past decade.

Threats to kelp in Western Canada

  • Thanks to ancient glaciers that carved up and reshaped Canada’s Pacific coast, B.C.’s kelp forests inhabit a rich mosaic of environments.
  • Nearly 40,000 islands and dozens of glacial fjords create diverse habitats for kelp.
  • In these areas, kelp forests have experienced large losses, especially over the past decade.
  • In some parts of B.C.’s central and northern coasts, some kelp forests are also in decline despite cooler waters.

Reasons for optimism

  • kelp forests have remained stable.
  • In fact, some of these healthy kelp forests might even be growing.
  • Areas with cool water temperatures, such as the Strait of Juan de Fuca, have stable kelp forests, despite extensive losses close by.

Innovative solutions are needed to save kelp

  • kelp forests are faring under intense ocean warming driven by climate change.

Global and regional initiatives to protect and restore kelp forests are gaining momentum.

  • This might include restoration of important predators in the ecosystem, controlling urchins so that kelp forests can flourish, or developing new techniques to restore kelp forests using strains capable of surviving warming conditions.

Permaculture showed us how to farm the land more gently. Can we do the same as we farm the sea?

These farms are springing up along coasts and in offshore waters worldwide.

Key Points:
  • These farms are springing up along coasts and in offshore waters worldwide.
  • Australians will be familiar with Tasmania’s salmon industry, New South Wales’ oyster farms, and seaweed farms along the southern coastline.
  • This approach has proven itself on land as a way to blend farming with healthy ecosystems.
  • Read more:
Farming fish in fresh water is more affordable and sustainable than in the ocean

Making aquaculture better

  • Many of today’s most pressing problems – from climate change to biodiversity loss to pollution – are linked to the way we produce food on land.
  • To make new farmland often involves removing habitat, destroying trees and adding synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.
  • We cannot afford to use the same intensive methods of farming in the oceans as we have been on land.

What is marine permaculture?

  • The goal was simple: create ways of farming which give back to the soil and ecosystems, using tools like no-till farming, companion planting and food forests.
  • Over the last 50 years, it has been adopted by farmers around the world.
  • Here, species with different ecological roles are grown together, producing more food from your farm – and strengthening natural ecosystem services.
  • Australian work here includes efforts to restore rocky reefs by creating structures with the nooks and crannies small sea creatures need.

From the grassroots

  • In part, that’s because supertrawlers, motherships, and large blue-water fish farms are expensive.
  • Small-scale sea farms are less likely to do damage, and should also boost resilience by investing in local social and environmental benefits.

How do we make this a reality?

  • Governments have an essential role in creating comprehensive spatial plans to guide aquaculture in an area or region.
  • Researchers can help by developing measures of success and testing new techniques to help guide the new communities which will form to farm the sea.
  • Over the past half-century, permaculture on land has grown into a diverse movement challenging conventional wisdom about how to produce food.

When you sit down to build a sandcastle, take a look around you: the beach is already sculpting

Retrieved on:
Tuesday, January 2, 2024

Little piles of wet sand are cast in a swirl from their rear end as part of their feeding cycle.

Key Points:
  • Little piles of wet sand are cast in a swirl from their rear end as part of their feeding cycle.
  • They are but one of an untold number of other participants in the constant evolution of forms at our water’s edge.
  • The forming of grains into what we commonly call a sandcastle on the other hand, speaks to a particularly human intentionality.

In collaboration with the beach

  • Building a sandcastle is a response to the full beach environment as a collaborator.
  • We attune ourselves to the quality of the sand, marvel at the comings and goings of the water and orient our construction for the wind’s abrasive blast.
  • We are vigilant to dogs’ unintended mark making, and backward running ball catchers who involuntarily progress our work from castle to ruin.

Attending to sand

  • Particular qualities of sand can be revealed to those who remain aware.
  • Rain falling from the sky onto fine sand creates a crispy layer over the drier sand below.
  • In construction there is sharp sand, fat sand and sand of specific dimensions.
  • The sand at the beach is the sand of that beach, undifferentiated by industrial ecologies and taken at its face value.

Working against collapse

Making objects with sand at the beach is a most egalitarian form of art making. Critiques of our constructions are generally of the generous kind. Passersby will applaud the magnitude of our creation, share in the joy as water fills our castle’s moats, and laugh shamelessly when the whole structure collapses.

  • We can understand that sand slumps in a particular way, and compact it in anticipation.
  • Seagrass, kelp, stones, glass and the egg sacs of moon snails may all present themselves for inclusion in a sandcastle.
  • Collapse is the thing you work against.
