Oppenheimer has an epic, layered soundtrack – but its real power is in the silence

'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds': who was atom bomb pioneer Robert Oppenheimer?

Drawing on music history

    • Sound in Nolan’s films is characteristically loud and arresting, accompanied by epic music scores.
    • Oppenheimer’s score moves from the gentle and personal to an imposing sound spectacle that heightens the intensity of the plot.
    • This is echoed in Oppenheimer: to underscore the visuals of atoms spinning, Göransson layers string harmonics in an escalating crescendo of quivering energy.

The tension of the violin

    • Harmonics is an overtone you hear when you place your finger softly on the string and play with the violin bow.
    • In this score, Göransson also employs non-traditional techniques such as tapping or hitting the body of the violin with the bow.
    • When these traditional and non-traditional performance techniques combine, the juxtaposition creates tension between the warm and more brittle sound qualities of the violin.
    • The violins shift to tension strings performing various rhythmic patterns and performance techniques.

The sound of silence

    • Feet stomping, synthesisers pulsing, clocks ticking and the electrical static of Geiger counters create a sound world of tension, dread and anticipation.
    • The music builds in intensity up to the moment of silence when the button is pushed: there is no turning back.
    • When the film only includes the “naked” sound of the world on screen, we feel the gravity of the situation.
    • The contrast between the fullness of the orchestra and the silence immerses us in the world.

Key Points:
  • He has gone down in history for the way he captured the light in his paintings and depicting the differences between Mediterranean and Cantabrian luminosity in moments of everyday life.
  • And we forget that in his first steps he was a great renovator in his approach to social realism, the prevailing trend at the end of the 19th century.
  • A century later, these gave way to anonymous men and women living simple lives, depicted with great nobility and drama.

The Hardness of the Sea

    • The idyllic sea to which we are accustomed in his paintings gives way to social realism.
    • Sorolla’s brushstrokes also capture with profound humanity the helplessness of two experienced sailors before the figure of the injured young man.
    • Sorolla, with a unique pictorial language, conveys the drama of the moment, exalting the simplicity of the anonymous fishermen.

Seafaring psychology

    • In Peeling Potatoes (1891) a solitary fisherman prepares his daily sustenance.
    • And in The Blessing of the Boat on Cabañal Beach (1895), the gaze of a young fisherman invites us to take part in the solemn ceremony.
    • The artist uses the light shed inside the hut to make a study of chiaroscuro in the definition of the space.

Inequalities on land

    • The denunciation of social inequalities in this early period of Sorolla’s work goes beyond the maritime sphere.
    • (1892), in which a woman travels from Valencia to Madrid handcuffed and guarded by the Benemérita for having killed her son.
    • In it, Marguerite, mad with love for the protagonist, is imprisoned for killing the illegitimate child she has with him.

Kole Omotoso, the Nigerian writer, scholar and actor who inspired a continent

Retrieved on:

Bankole Ajibabi Omotoso, better known as Kole Omotoso, the Nigerian novelist, playwright, journalist, scholar and actor, died on 19 July 2023.

Key Points:
  • Bankole Ajibabi Omotoso, better known as Kole Omotoso, the Nigerian novelist, playwright, journalist, scholar and actor, died on 19 July 2023.
  • Omotoso not only wrote plays but was an actor as well – that made him special.
  • His books and plays are testaments to his faith in Nigeria and the place of humanity in the world.

Early life and academic career

    • He attended the University of Ibadan, where he studied Arabic literature, and obtained a PhD in Arabic at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
    • He returned home to the University of Ibadan to lecture in the department of Arabic and Islamic studies (1972–76).
    • He then moved to the drama department of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife) from 1976 to 1988.

His legacy

    • It includes The Edifice (Heinemann, 1971); The Combat (Heinemann, 1972); Miracles (short stories) (Onibonoje Press, 1973); Fella’s Choice (Ethiope, 1974); and Sacrifice (Onibonoje, 1974).
    • Perhaps his most enduring and important book is Just Before Dawn, which is categorised as “faction” – a mixture of fiction and facts in fictionalised form.
    • It remains an important legacy that should be read by any literate Nigerian.

Life in exile

In the heat of the ruinous military rule and the anomie of the 1980s Omotoso and other academics left Nigeria. After a spell in Europe Omotoso settled in South Africa. There, he was popularly known for his role in commercials for the cellphone company Vodacom in the 1990s. He was the “Yebo Gogo man”, who always humorously came to the rescue of an inept white man in various situations.

Personal encounters

    • I was a first-year student at the Bayero University in 1984/5 when he was touring the country to gather material for Just Before Dawn.
    • He spoke passionately about his project and why he was travelling around the country.
    • His pep talks to us about Nigeria, her potential and the need to document our stories and history caught my fancy.

David Grann's The Wager: a drama of murder, insurrection, escape and an empire at sea

Retrieved on:
Monday, July 31, 2023

But even before the mission got underway, its prospects of success appeared dubious.

Key Points:
  • But even before the mission got underway, its prospects of success appeared dubious.
  • A sizeable proportion of the roughly 2,000 sailors and non-seamen under Anson’s command lacked suitable experience.
  • Worse still was the fact that so many of them took up their posts already in a parlous state of health.
  • After several weeks plying those waters in severe weather, the Wager lost contact with Anson’s flagship and the rest of the fleet.

The work of seagoing

    • (In a recent interview, Grann cited David McCullough’s history of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge as a model of engaging technical prose.)
    • Throughout, Grann’s book registers profound respect for the work of seagoing – work Anson’s crews carried out amidst a wartime atmosphere of “constant stress.” As the Wager wrecked, its men embarked upon a new – and yet harsher – enterprise: to remain united and alive in a situation their knowledge and experience seemed helpless to comprehend.
    • It was wintertime on a small, mountainous island – itself called Wager, nowadays – at close to 48 degrees southern latitude.
    • Between Portsmouth and Patagonia, more than one third of the ship’s complement of 250 men had been buried at sea.

Legal burlesque

    • Meanwhile, the British Admiralty came to require its officers to maintain detailed records of nautical incidents.
    • Among the strangest and most effective passages in this book are episodes of legal burlesque, wherein little bands of shipwrecked sailors, clad in rags and emaciated from hunger, draw up quasi-formal documents purporting to attest to some version of their experience.
    • Understanding this wreck impinges directly upon our sense of the British Empire and the civilisation it claimed to convey.
    • At Wager Island, Grann observes, some “supposed apostles of the Enlightenment” were reduced to “a Hobbesian state of depravity”.
    • He sees them negotiating the lands and waters they inhabit with a degree of know-how the British strain even to imagine.
