KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii , Jan. 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbrosia, a Hawaii-based cleantech startup that uses seaweed to drastically reduce livestock methane emissions, is excited to announce a study with Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (Cornell CALS), supported by Danone North America, a leading food and beverage company. Designed by Associate Professor Joe McFadden, the study aims to prove the effectiveness of an Asparagopsis-based seaweed oil extract for reducing livestock methane emissions compared to Symbrosia's existing freeze-dried seaweed products.

Key Points:
  • Designed by Associate Professor Joe McFadden, the study aims to prove the effectiveness of an Asparagopsis-based seaweed oil extract for reducing livestock methane emissions compared to Symbrosia's existing freeze-dried seaweed products.
  • "The study is more in-depth than any previous, accounting for animal and human food safety, energetics, manure composition, and gas emissions.
  • The Asparagopsis species has been proven to reduce methane emissions in ruminant species by interfering with the methanogenesis process.
  • "The use of Asparagopsis-based seaweed oil extract as a methane mitigator for livestock requires a holistic scientific approach to ensure sustained efficacy and safety," McFadden said.

How rising sea levels will affect our coastal cities and towns

Yet exactly how rising water levels affect the coast is often misunderstood.

Key Points:
  • Yet exactly how rising water levels affect the coast is often misunderstood.
  • A new coastal hazard assessment for Victoria’s Port Phillip Bay has again thrown the spotlight on the impact of sea-level rise on coastal communities in Australia.
  • We should be doing all we can to limit sea-level rise to protect our coastal cities and towns.

Why are sea levels rising?

  • Global sea levels are rising for two main reasons: the oceans are getting warmer, and land-based ice sheets and glaciers are melting.
  • Because the ocean basins are finite (like a bathtub), this results in a rise in water levels.
  • “Relative” or “isostatic” sea level is the sum of “eustatic” sea level plus local vertical land movement.
  • This slow rebound of the land provides a small offset to eustatic sea levels around Australia.

Sea-level rise is accelerating

  • Tide gauges indicate the rate of rise in northern Australia since the early 1990s is around 4–6mm/yr.
  • Rates of sea-level rise are not uniform around Australia because of local effects like ocean circulation and tidal processes.
  • This is why is it important to factor in sea-level rise when we make planning decisions along the coast.
  • Unfortunately, the rate of sea-level rise over the coming century remains highly uncertain, making it difficult to include in coastal planning.

Small rises have big impacts

  • An increase in tide heights (both higher high tides and higher low tides) increases the probability of coastal flooding and erosion when storms come along.
  • While these back-of-the-envelope estimates are often significantly reduced when local conditions are accounted for, it explains why a small shift in the mean sea level can have big impacts at the coast.

Storms aren’t always bad for the beach

  • A high water level plus a storm surge on top leads to a storm or “king” tide.
  • However, storms also bring sand from deeper water towards the beach.

All eyes on Antarctica

  • Sea-level rise is here to stay and gathering pace, but the rate of future increase remains uncertain.
  • It largely depends on what happens in Antarctica over the coming decades.

When you sit down to build a sandcastle, take a look around you: the beach is already sculpting

Little piles of wet sand are cast in a swirl from their rear end as part of their feeding cycle.

Key Points:
  • Little piles of wet sand are cast in a swirl from their rear end as part of their feeding cycle.
  • They are but one of an untold number of other participants in the constant evolution of forms at our water’s edge.
  • The forming of grains into what we commonly call a sandcastle on the other hand, speaks to a particularly human intentionality.

In collaboration with the beach

  • Building a sandcastle is a response to the full beach environment as a collaborator.
  • We attune ourselves to the quality of the sand, marvel at the comings and goings of the water and orient our construction for the wind’s abrasive blast.
  • We are vigilant to dogs’ unintended mark making, and backward running ball catchers who involuntarily progress our work from castle to ruin.

Attending to sand

  • Particular qualities of sand can be revealed to those who remain aware.
  • Rain falling from the sky onto fine sand creates a crispy layer over the drier sand below.
  • In construction there is sharp sand, fat sand and sand of specific dimensions.
  • The sand at the beach is the sand of that beach, undifferentiated by industrial ecologies and taken at its face value.

Working against collapse

Making objects with sand at the beach is a most egalitarian form of art making. Critiques of our constructions are generally of the generous kind. Passersby will applaud the magnitude of our creation, share in the joy as water fills our castle’s moats, and laugh shamelessly when the whole structure collapses.

  • We can understand that sand slumps in a particular way, and compact it in anticipation.
  • Seagrass, kelp, stones, glass and the egg sacs of moon snails may all present themselves for inclusion in a sandcastle.
  • Collapse is the thing you work against.
