From Corona beer to the coronation, the crown is branding fit for a king

And as the coronation of King Charles III reminds us, the crown is also a superlative brand.

Key Points:
  • And as the coronation of King Charles III reminds us, the crown is also a superlative brand.
  • Though images of crowns are often used in royal branding, it is rare for monarchs these days to actually wear crowns.
  • In the UK the crown encompasses both the monarch and the government, namely King Charles III and His Majesty’s government.
  • Still, they all use a crown as the marque (or embelem) to represent themselves – see Luxembourg and Denmark’s coats of arms.

Crowns of the coronation

    • The coronation of King Charles III will be a veritable festival of crowns, featuring seven crowns in total.
    • The last queen consort to undergo a coronation was in 1937.
    • Four other crowns will be present during the coronation, worn by the kings of arms – senior officers who regulate heraldry (coats of arms) in the UK and participate in major ceremonial occasions.

Crown brands in business

    • The Danish royal warrant entitles an organisation to display “an image of the crown along with the company’s name on signs”.
    • Of course, while some brands have an official royal endorsement, most organisations with a crown name or logo do not have a direct association with monarchy.
    • Sometimes the crown brand name is used for its cultural associations – see the many British pubs called “The Crown”.
    • Among the companies using a crown name are Couronne (Korean handbags), Crown Bank (USA), Crown Class (Royal Jordanian Airways), Royal Crown Derby (English porcelain), Crowne Plaza Hotels (UK), Crown Royal (Canadian Whiskey), Crown Worldwide Distribution Group (Hong Kong) and Krone (South African sparkling wine).

King Charles coronation: what impartial broadcast coverage of the event would look like

Many of those viewers will be watching on the BBC, whose impartiality when it comes to the monarchy has come under question.

Key Points:
  • Many of those viewers will be watching on the BBC, whose impartiality when it comes to the monarchy has come under question.
  • Unlike newspapers, online news and social media, broadcasters are regulated by Ofcom and have to abide by rules on impartiality.
  • For more royal analysis, revisit our coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum jubilee, and her death in September 2022.
  • The regulator also points out that any topic – not just political controversy or public policy – is potentially subject to impartiality.

Covering the crown

    • In a Netflix series, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, reflected on her experiences of racism inside Buckingham Palace.
    • While Netflix is not subject to Ofcom regulation, many broadcasters followed up on the interviews.
    • Some, including the BBC, reported on Prince Harry’s suggestion that an “invisible contract” existed between the royal family and reporters.
    • This gave credence to claims that journalists trade inside access for less serious scrutiny of the monarchy.

Impartial coronation coverage

    • In day-to-day reporting, my studies of television news have shown the monarchy do not typically make up much coverage.
    • But based on the special programming broadcasters have announced they intend to air during the coronation, it does not look likely that these perspectives will be prominently reflected.
    • Meanwhile, debates about the pros and cons of a constitutional monarchy could be a more regular part of coverage.
    • An impartial approach to covering the coronation would include broadcasters not only reporting the pomp, circumstance and bank holiday celebrations – it would also feature perspectives that question the existence and role of the monarchy.

What King Charles III's coronation quiche tells us about the history of British dining

Retrieved on:
Thursday, April 20, 2023

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have announced a quiche as the official coronation dish.

Key Points:
  • King Charles III and Queen Camilla have announced a quiche as the official coronation dish.
  • Like Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation chicken, it reveals much about the inevitability of multiculturalism in the kitchen.
  • This piece is part of our coverage of King Charles III’s coronation.
  • King Charles III is reportedly going for a shorter, simpler ceremony than his mother did in 1953.

French culinary influence

    • George IV, whom William succeeded, was well known for his love of rich French foods.
    • Any cultural animosity that persists between the British and the French is held with much greater ambivalence in the kitchen than elsewhere.
    • In opting for a French dish, Charles thus follows in the footsteps of his forebears.
    • And Elizabeth II’s menu for her coronation lunch, much like that for George IV’s coronation banquet, was written almost entirely in French, though it told a British story.

A British story

    • The soup took pride of place at banquet tables throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
    • It thus tells the nation’s violent colonial history, whether or not this was the intended message of those who composed Elizabeth’s menu.
    • Lamb cooked à la Windsor followed, along with green beans, asparagus, and later strawberries, all presumably locally grown.
    • Contrary to his son George IV’s predilection for rich French cuisine, George III preferred more typically British flavours – fruit tarts and simple dishes of egg and spinach.
    • Since the British king was also the Elector of Hannover, and his wife, Queen Charlotte, a German princess, there are hints of German eating in the royal ledgers too.
