To combat climate change and move towards the goal of carbon neutrality, researchers from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have developed a durable, highly selective and energy-efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction system that can convert CO2 into ethylene for industrial purposes to provide an effective solution for reducing CO2 emissions.

Key Points:
  • To combat climate change and move towards the goal of carbon neutrality, researchers from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have developed a durable, highly selective and energy-efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction system that can convert CO2 into ethylene for industrial purposes to provide an effective solution for reducing CO2 emissions.
  • However, it is still mostly obtained from petrochemical sources and the production process involves the creation of a very significant carbon footprint.
  • The research team is working to promote this emerging technology to bring it closer to mass production, closing the carbon loop and ultimately achieving carbon neutrality.
  • It is clear that this APMA cell design underpins a transition to green production of ethylene and other valuable chemicals and can contribute to reducing carbon emissions and achieving the goal of carbon neutrality."

  • Their objective was to inform researchers, regulators, policymakers, industry, and funding agencies about opportunities to enhance the models.
  • The paper focuses specifically on capacity expansion models, which are tools used to simulate future grids and identify optimal investments over multi-year periods.
  • Energy storage can potentially promote equity by reducing energy costs in disadvantaged communities and enhancing their resilience during extreme weather.

NREL Analysis Quantifies Impacts of Setback Ordinances on Land Available for Renewable Energy Deployment

Retrieved on:
Thursday, August 3, 2023

The amount of land available to deploy renewables depends on the characteristics of the ordinances.

Key Points:
  • The amount of land available to deploy renewables depends on the characteristics of the ordinances.
  • “Setback ordinances determine how much land is available for deployment and how much wind and solar resource we have to decarbonize our energy system.”
The impact of setback ordinances has not traditionally been captured in large-scale resource assessments because it requires highly detailed modeling and hyperlocal data.
  • Ordinances can also protect the natural habitats and species where renewable energy projects are deployed and ensure efficient, sustainable use of land resources.
