The SGS seeks to promote excellence in gynecologic surgery through knowledge acquisition and improvement of skills, advancement of basic and clinical research, and professional and public education. Each year, the organization holds an Annual Scientific Meeting, where a variety of awards are presented to nominated professionals in the field. All nominations are voted on by the SGS Board to determine the award winners.

The Distinguished Surgeon Award winner is selected by the current SGS president, based on contributions to the field of gynecologic surgery — clinically and/or through research and innovation. First presented in 1985, the honor of the Distinguished Surgeon Award is granted to an individual who has made a positive impact to the field of gynecologic surgery or mentoring.

In his current role, Einarsson serves as the chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. His clinical interests include cervical insufficiency/incompetence, endometriosis, fibroids, laparoscopic surgery, LGBTQ health and prolapse.
