InnovaCare Health Subsidiary Continues Collaboration to End Abuse and Exploitation of Seniors
The CIAV currently offers free orientation and legal representation services to low-income individuals, victims of human trafficking and elderly victims of physical, emotional and economic exploitation.
InnovaCare Health subsidiary MMM Healthcare (MMM) in partnership with the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) School of Law support senior citizens throughout the pandemic and beyond through the Comprehensive Victim Support Center (CIAV, for “Centro Integral de Apoyo a Víctimas”). The alliance was forged in 2018 to support MMM members in issues beyond healthcare and consists of a series of educational efforts aimed at elderly victims of physical, emotional and economic exploitation, among others.
The alliance includes a corporate donation from MMM over two years to give greater scope to the services the CIAV offers to the elderly. The CIAV currently offers free orientation and legal representation services to low-income individuals, victims of human trafficking and elderly victims of physical, emotional and economic exploitation.
Since launching the partnership, MMM’s donation has empowered the CIAV to educate MMM members and other senior Puerto Ricans through seminars with CIAV legal advisors and legal representation on a variety of matters. During the coronavirus pandemic, MMM and CIAV are providing seniors with information and guidance on how to file a protective order as an added security measure for anyone facing unsafe situations during the quarantine. This joint initiative protects older adults from domestic abuse, intra-family abuse, and other violent situations.
In June, MMM received a letter from Vivian I. Neptune Rivera, Dean of the UPR School of Law, thanking the organization for their collaboration and commitment to putting an end to the exploitation and abuse of seniors.
“With MMM's donation, we have accompanied and provided legal representation in administrative and judicial forums, dealing with issues such as lack of drinking water in homes for 10 years, and other legal needs,” Dean Neptune wrote in her letter. “We deeply appreciate this MMM donation, for making it possible to expand CIAV services and for facilitating the process of educating the elderly population about their rights and the process to vindicate them. We will continue to provide an excellent service and expand our offerings.”
"We hope this is one of many collaborations we can have with MMM since our commitment to the elderly population includes our Legal Aid Clinic and the CIAV," said Dean Neptune in a release. "The legal assistance needs of this population can be met through the services we offer or with referrals to relevant agencies. We thank MMM for the trust placed in us to continue educating about the rights of the elderly and the ability to serve those who need our help and legal advice."
MMM Healthcare will continue to look for opportunities to collaborate with the CIAV in the best interest of the people it serves.
"For us, it is important that our members and senior citizens have all the resources necessary to take care of their physical and emotional health,” said Orlando González, Esq., president of MMM. “In addition to the coordinated care we offer across the spectrum for our seniors, this alliance with the UPR School of Law allows us to go the extra mile by helping identify situations in which seniors are being victimized, and then allowing us to help them avoid any unfortunate outcomes. Since the onset of the pandemic, we have been readying for an increased need for these types of services, and we are grateful to have a partner who can help us meet that critical need.”
