The Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation, Inc. has announced cash grants of more than $650,000 to be awarded to organizations dedicated to the support of classical music and to improving medical care with an emphasis on aging.

Sherrill House, one of the grantees, is an independent, not-for-profit nursing facility in Boston with the state’s first dedicated Alzheimer’s special care unit. Founded in 1907, it has a well-developed expressive therapy program, including music therapy, that integrates the arts within the context of long-term care and is considered to have one of the most advanced and extensive programs. The $100,000 grant will assist the organization to further its work and develop new approaches in the care of the aged.

“We are committed to supporting organizations such as Sherrill House which combines two of Dr. Pearce’s passions – classical music and medicine,” said Charles Douglas, chairman and president of The Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation, Inc. “It is our hope that the extraordinary work these organizations are doing will continue to benefit their respective communities now and for future generations.”

An avid classical music lover, Dr. Pearce passed away in October 2017. The foundation continues to support South Florida’s classical music programs in his name with grants totaling $225,000 for the Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency and Education program, the New World Symphony, and the University of Miami’s Frost Chopin Academy.

Additional foundation grants were awarded to the Mayo Clinic – Macular Degeneration Clinical Study ($150,000), the Washington National Opera – production of Verdi’s Otello ($100,000), and Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music ($80,000).
