2019's Oregon Coho Salmon Run Is Largest In Recent Years

ASTORIA, Ore., July 01, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Improving ocean conditions are primarily responsible for the large increase in the Coho Salmon population. While many of these salmon will be returning to Oregon coastal tributaries, the bulk of the run (approximately 905,000 fish) will be entering the Columbia River.

"The ocean opened for salmon fishing on June 22, and the catch rate has been very good right from the start," says Oregon fishing charter captain Kevin Newell. "With a forecasted Coho return of more than double our ten-year average, this is shaping up to be an unbelievable run."

Lacey DeWeert an Astoria fishing guide says, "We have two overlapping runs of Coho. The first run of fish is called our A-Run, these salmon start arriving in early August into September and overlap with our larger B-Run fish that show up in September and continue into late October."

Oregon anglers intercept these salmon as they enter the fresh water of the Columbia River near Buoy 10. The popular Buoy 10 fishery at the mouth of the Columbia sees scores of anglers taking home limits of salmon. "This area provides some of our best fishing of the year. With runs this large, it's not uncommon to look out and see every boat around you hooked up," says Newell.

"Having large salmon runs is really great for the local economy.
