74% lack confidence that they're using the right moisturizer for
their skin - 84% aren’t knowledgeable about the ingredients in their moisturizer
- 61% believe that using a moisturizer can prevent wrinkles (False)
-
73% think the more you moisturize the more hydrated your skin will
be (False)
These are just a few of the key findings from a survey conducted for the
all-new Remedy Dermatology Series Moisturizing Body Lotion.
“With so many products to choose from, it’s not surprising that many
consumers are confused about what ingredients to look for in their skin
and body moisturizer,” says dermatologist Dr. Christina Weng, Harvard
Medical School. “For example, those with sensitive skin or who are prone
to allergies, should try to find lotions that are free of allergens,
parabens, sulfates, and other possible skin irritants – information they
can usually find listed on the packaging.”
According to Dr. Weng there are certain qualities or ingredients
consumers should look for in a moisturizer to keep their skin balanced
and nourished. “The Remedy Moisturizing Body Lotion contains nutrients,
emollients, and antioxidants that come from natural plant-based sources,
including green tea, clove flower, safflower and soy. Notably, it’s free
of 80 of the most common allergens that contribute to rashes and skin
sensitivity.”
Dispelling Moisturizer Myths
In addition to confusion about which ingredients are important to look
for, survey respondents also voiced some common misconceptions about
moisturizers in general. For example, almost half of the survey
respondents (49 percent) believed that you should only use moisturizer
if you have dry skin, which according to experts is simply not true.
“Although it may seem counterintuitive, you should actually apply
moisturizer onto damp skin, as this will help lock in any excess water
sitting on the surface before it evaporates from your skin,” says Dr.
Weng.
Another commonly held myth is that the more moisturizer you use the more
hydrated your skin will be. “Not true,” says Dr. Weng. “Good quality
moisturizers are highly concentrated and are designed to be effective
even without requiring a thick layer. If you use too much product, it’s
more likely to sit on the surface of your skin, occlude the surface, and
potentially trigger breakouts, she adds.
While there are common allergens that are present in many skincare
products, Dr. Weng notes that it’s important for consumers with
sensitive skin or allergies to look for products that avoid these
irritating additives. “It can be hard to find a product that is free of
all allergens, but a lotion that is specifically formulated to be free
of 80 of the most common allergens will likely set a new standard for
products for sensitive skin.”
The study was commissioned by Medline Industries in April 2019, among a
cross section of 1,000 U.S. adults age 18 and over. Dr. Weng is a
consultant to Medline Industries, Inc. For more information about
