On February 7, 2024, at this year’s International Stroke Conference (ISC), Life Recovery Systems (LRS) presented the results of its IDE-approved SISCO Study, in which ischemic stroke patients were rapidly cooled with the ThermoSuit System (TSS). The TSS cooled patients to 34°C in a record time of 40 minutes in this pilot study. The authors of the study observed a 75% relative reduction in the rate of patients having mRS scores >3 at 90 days (patients unable to walk and talk) vs. retrospective controls. No previous stroke cooling studies have had such rapid cooling or any trend for outcome improvements in patients. The study also demonstrated the safety of the ThermoSuit treatment in stroke patients. A manuscript for publication is planned, as is a pivotal trial to seek FDA clearance for the indication. The ThermoSuit System uniquely uses liquid convection cooling to rapidly cool patients. Upon reaching target temperature the TSS is removed from the patient, and the patient can easily be maintained in the target range using standard cooling blankets or pads. The device is currently cleared under 510(k) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for patient temperature reduction where clinically indicated, e.g. for hyperthermic patients.
