2022 Queens World Film Festival highlights
Charm Circle
Winner of the Metropolis Special Jury Prize at DOC NYC, Nina Burstein's exceedingly intimate portrait of an idiosyncratic family (her own) casts a knowing gaze upon a baby boomer couple on the edge of losing their sanity and home in Queens when their youngest daughter announces her polyamorous wedding. Emotional and accomplished, especially as it weaves together decades-old home videos and contemporary footage, the film crafts a powerful family portrait that questions the value of the bonds that tie us together. Viewers won't be the least surprised that Burstein's feature-length debut is executive produced by Fred Armisen. (79 mins.)
Anarctica
Once shy Kat is now popular and hooking up at parties, while misfit Janet is put on a strange medication for her "bad behavior." Things get even odder when Janet meets a cute boy who might be a time traveler, and Kat's panicked parents send her off to sex rehab. Can anything make life in the suburbs normal again? (80 mins.)
Papaw Land
Winner of both the Best Narrative Feature and the Audience Award at the Knoxville Film Festival, Papaw Land is a coming-of-age drama set in rural Arkansas. 17-year-old Matthew is slipping into a cycle of alcohol and drugs that looks all too familiar to his single mother, Christy. In a desperate bid to break the cycle, she sends him away for a summer of sobriety and honest work at his grandfather's place in the Ozarks. (75 mins.)
August at Twenty-Two
Cal, a floundering actress, accidentally falls in love with her best friend's girlfriend, Emily. Feeling unfulfilled by disappointing auditions, pressure to succeed (whatever that means), and failed attempts to reconnect with Jacob, Cal seeks a new companion in Em. As Cal gets swept up in her exciting new social life, she begins neglecting her best friend Bobby, who is becoming increasingly concerned about her rapidly changing focus. (80 mins.)
The Social Chameleon
Cosmo the Chameleon doesn't fit in with the other animals. No matter how hard he tries, he just can't seem to find his place in the jungle. Then, everything changes when he meets another chameleon who shows him how to live by his own true colors. (10 mins.)
