'Glow More Than a Runway' historic fashion show to celebrate World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

Hospice of the Chesapeake is the first American organization to celebrate this worldwide day.

CHEVY CHASE, Md., Oct. 6, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hospice of the Chesapeake, a not-for-profit care organization providing hospice care, supportive care, and grief support services for individuals living with and affected by advanced illness, announces they will be hosting 'Glow: More than a Runway', a historic fashion show on Saturday, October 8th displaying designers from all over the world, with ambassadors from South Africa and the U.K., to celebrate World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD). Hospice of the Chesapeake is the first American organization to celebrate this global initiative.

Together with Saks Fifth Avenue Chevy Chase, they are working to amplify the WHPCD theme, "Healing Hearts and Communities." Guests will enjoy a highly curated evening that will consist of a dinner and fashion show highlighting the best fashion trends of the Fall season from some of the top international designers at Saks Fifth Avenue Chevy Chase. The planning for this fundraiser is already bringing together leaders from the communities of fashion, healthcare, business, and philanthropy.

Funds raised from the event will support the work of the not-for-profit Hospice of the Chesapeake. The organization has grown and expanded over its 43 years to care for people living with advanced illness and loss as well as their families in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, and Prince George's Counties. This amounts to more than 52,000 hospice patients and more than 100,000 family members receiving compassionate and expert care from hospice, supportive, and bereavement team members since founding of the care organization in 1979.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is a unifying day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world. To mark WHPCD 2022, thousands of people will be coming together on the 8th of October 2022 to celebrate, but most importantly to speak out about their lived experiences in grief, loss, and bereavement.

According to the Global Atlas of Palliative Care, over 56.8 million people are estimated to require palliative care every year including 31.1 million prior to and 25.7 million near the end of life. The majority (67%) are adults over 50 years old and at least 7% are children. The majority (54%) are non-decedents who need palliative care prior to their last year of life. The burden of severe illness and health-related suffering, and the corresponding need for palliative care, are immense. Yet palliative care is still not accessible to most people in need, especially in low and middle-income countries.

Why do we need WHPCD?
There are still far too many people that are unable to access this essential service, especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). We cannot achieve universal health coverage without palliative care, which is also a key component of the right to health and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal for good health and well-being.

NB: The WHPCA is asking all editors not to use the term 'hospice' as a standalone word, as it merely reinforces perceptions that the palliative care is only delivered in an in-patient, or building. We are working to spread the word that a hospice goes hand in hand with palliative care that can be delivered in any setting, home, informal settlement, hospital, or care/nursing home.
