The "Chile Construction Market Size, Trends and Forecasts by Sector - Commercial, Industrial, Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Institutional and Residential Market Analysis, 2022-2026" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.
The construction industry in Chile registered an annual growth of 13.6% in real terms in 2021 - up from a decline of 12.1% in 2020.
The industry's growth that year was supported by a favorable base, improvement in consumer and business confidence amid progress in the country's vaccination drive and the execution of large-scale public infrastructure projects.
The industry's growth momentum is likely to carry into 2022, with the construction industry expected to grow by 5.7% this year, supported by an improvement in non-mining activities. According to the Central Bank of Chile (Banco Central de Chile), the IMACEC economic activity index grew by 7.9% year on year (YoY) in the first quarter of this year, driven by a 10% Y-o-Y growth in the non-mining sector.
The construction industry's growth this year will also be supported by investments in housing, transport infrastructure and sports projects, in preparation for the Pan American and Parapan American Games that will be held in Chile next year.
The publisher expects the Chilean construction industry to register an annual average growth of 3.3% from 2023 to 2026, supported by investments in transport, water, hydrogen and housing projects. According to Chile's environmental evaluation service (SEA), 936 projects worth CLP40.9 trillion ($55.2 billion) were submitted for environmental assessment in 2021 - up from 892 projects worth CLP36.1 trillion ($48.8 billion) in 2020.
The proposals include projects in the energy, mining, water and transportation sectors, among others. In another positive development, the total number of environmental assessment proposals approved by the SEA rose by 21.4% in 2021, while the value of approved proposals rose by 29.2%.
Over the forecast period, industry growth will also be supported by investments in renewable energy and electric vehicle manufacturing projects, in line with the government's aim to reduce carbon emissions and have renewable energy account for 80% of the total electricity generation by 2030.
To achieve this target, the government announced in April 2022 that it will tender 2,786 hectares (ha) of land in the Commune of Santa Elena, with this land being used for the deployment of wind or solar power projects.
