Creating a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for students begins by developing and promoting the leaders of color they look up to.
NEW YORK, March 8, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Institute for Education Innovation, an organization that serves as the bridge between district leaders and organizations driving change to support the greatest challenges in K-12 education, today announced the organization is co-hosting the Cultivating Leaders for Equity and Inclusion Workshop on July 22-24, 2022 with Dr. Luvelle Brown, Superintendent of Ithaca City School District.
Creating a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for students begins by developing and promoting the leaders of color they look up to. Through the Cultivating Leaders for Equity and Inclusion Workshop, influential changemakers in the education field will gather in Ithaca, New York to support the professional growth of future and current leaders, engage in learning opportunities, and become part of a diverse network of individuals who are passionate about ensuring equity in education, from the superintendent's office to the classroom.
During the symposium, principals, district administrators, and superintendents can participate in round table discussions, panels, and shared experiences that feature a roster of speakers in addition to Dr. Brown, including:
- Doug Roberts, Founder and CEO of the Institute for Education Innovation (IEI) and IEI: Lead Aspiring Superintendents Institute
- Dr. Gustavo Balderas, Superintendent, Edmonds School District in Washington and president-elect for the National Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents
- Dr. Mark Bedell, Superintendent, Kansas City Public Schools in Missouri
- Traci Davis, Superintendent Emeritus, Washoe County School District in Nevada
"When building a DEI program for their districts, school leaders need to first take a step back to see who is – and is not – sitting at the conference table alongside them," said Dr. Brown. "Research has found Black and Latino students perform better when their districts are led by those with similar racial identities, but only eight percent of superintendents are people of color. The Cultivating Leaders for Equity and Inclusion Workshop is focused on bringing together individuals with a shared goal of supporting greater representation in leadership to improve student outcomes."
"For too long, the career trajectory of talented educators has been blocked by a lack of professional development opportunities for people of color," Roberts remarked. "By connecting aspiring and current superintendents through the Workshop, we want to help fill the gaps many school districts have yet to address and strengthen the leadership pipeline."
The Cultivating Leaders for Equity and Inclusion Workshop is free for educators to attend. Participants will enjoy a complimentary two-night stay at the Ithaca Marriott Downtown and are only responsible for their travel to the symposium.
