In the United States, marijuana is still illegal at the federal level. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classified marijuana as a Schedule I drug and prohibited federally registered physicians from prescribing it.

However, increasingly tolerant attitudes have slowly changed how the country views cannabis at the state level—today adults can use marijuana without a prescription in 9 states and they can obtain medical marijuana with a prescription in 29 states.

After theAmendment was passed into law, well-known federal court cases have ruled in favor of medical marijuana defendants who adhered to their state's medical marijuana laws. Though, the extent to which the Amendment will establish a precedent is yet to be seen.

Last year more countries moved to legalize marijuana at the federal level, and this year more countries will evaluate their marijuana policies.

The shift toward more relaxed marijuana legislation around the globe can be traced back to the growing medical marijuana industry in the U.S. and changing attitudes about the use of cannabis.

Opportunities expand as attitudes shift.  A new wave of business is upon us. A wide variety of marijuana businesses will pop up over the next decade.
