Statistics Canada launches crowdsourcing consultation on measuring poverty

OTTAWA, Oct. 15, 2018 /CNW/ - As part of a consultation to validate how it measures poverty, Statistics Canada has launched a short questionnaire to seek input from Canadians.

The consultation is being undertaken on behalf of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), following a recent announcement by the Government of Canada that the Market Basket Measure (MBM) will be used as Canada's Official Poverty Line.

The MBM is a measure of low income, based on the cost of a basket of goods and services that individuals and families require to meet their basic needs and achieve a modest standard of living in their community. Under this measure, individuals and families living across the country will be considered to be living below Canada's Official Poverty Line if they cannot afford the cost of this basket of goods and services in their particular community.

Participation is anonymous and respondent information is protected by the Privacy Act. All Canadians are invited to take part in the questionnaire between October 15, 2018 and January 31, 2019.
