SNU Co-Hosts Reading Conference with the Oklahoma Speech Hearing Language Association

OKLAHOMA CITY, Nov. 19, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Nazarene University (SNU)—a private, Christian, liberal arts university that offers flexible degree-completion and graduate programs for working adults through its College of Professional and Graduate Studies—today announced it has successfully co-hosted a reading conference with the Oklahoma Speech Hearing Language Association (OSHLA) for more than 230 of the state's educators who teach struggling readers. During the event, Dr. David Kilpatrick, a nationally recognized expert in research-based practices for dyslexic readers, presented a host of effective interventions to assist educators in addressing these students' needs.

Like most of the nation, Oklahoma strives to improve literacy rates among school-aged children. The struggle is often due to unidentified or untreated learning disabilities. Addressing those learning disabilities properly can have a profoundly positive impact on struggling readers. Collaborating with instructional experts to focus on these issues is one key goal of SNU's M.A. in Administration of Special Education (MAASE) program, which is part of its College for Professional and Graduate Studies. In addition to offering this program, SNU is active in the community, working to help Oklahoma's educators use best practices to support readers who face challenges.

SNU's MAASE program empowers educators to become leaders in special education. The M.A. in Administration of Special Education seamlessly blends theories and practices with authentic and meaningful coursework that includes: program development; evaluation and assessment; law and policy; management of IEPs; and techniques for collaborating with staff, parents, and students. The curriculum includes community relations and communications, budgeting, and ethics. Students learn from current leaders in special education, and gain a practical, invaluable experience by taking one evening class per week in person or completely online anytime and from anywhere.
